“Please help me persuade Northern Rail to deal with the low platform at Sankey station” – Neil Macaskill;

Description

Neil Macaskill;

The "Warrington-bound" platform at Sankey station is extremely low. This causes problems for people boarding and alighting, particularly to/from Class 150 trains, with elderly and infirm people finding it almost impossible.

If it is not possible to raise the platform (or lower the track) on grounds of expense (though this has been done at Widnes) would it be possible for the conductor to have a step stool or box (as happens on some stations eg on the Cumbrian coast line) for passengers to use on request.

    Is there a legal maximum height between train door and platform and does Sankey station meet this standard?

    Hello

    FixMyTransport volunteer here

    I would not know if Sankey meets the legal/design requirements but a possible option might be to install a Harrington Hump.

    FixMyTransport Admin here.

    Well, you live and learn: I've found a document setting out legal platform heights (although, I don't know if it's current): http://www.rgsonline.co.uk/Railway_Group_Standards/Infrastructure/Guidance%20Notes/GEGN8501%20Iss%201.pdf.

    "All new rolling stock shall be designed and built to give the smallest possible
    stepping distance to the standard platform height of 915mm. Differences in
    level between the vehicle floor and the entrance can be accommodated by
    providing reasonable ramps or steps within the body. Any steps at the entrance
    to a vehicle must be wide enough to be safely used as a firm foot step".

    As you can see, this talks about the introduction on *new* rolling stock - there may be a more pertinent clause that you could use to make your case - I've only skim read at this point.
