“Please help me persuade Northern Rail to earn thier pay rise and be on time..” – Tony Backhouse

Description

Tony Backhouse

07.02 from Castleford arrives at the platform at 07.13, then waits then announces this is the 07.02 to Leeds...err no this is the 07.15 now and it's late, we may be commuters but we can tell the time. As the fares went up by 10 % this time can we please have some trains on time? Last nights 16.32 from Leeds arrived and left by the skin of it's teeth 5 mins late. It would be nice to feel that extra £10 out of my no pay rise for 3 years salary went to something more than a poor service.

My train is due out at 7.02, it never goes on time. When it is late you get announcements for the 7.02...except it's 7.10..12..14 so then it gets to Leeds late and sits outside waiting for a platform. Given it's one of the first trains of the day and the same route is run every day how hard can it be to work out why it's always late. The problem is so endemic the train crew stand about and chat even when they are late.
The evening service has been on time of late..hooray! I know just where to stand for the doors as the pile of excrement and paper on the track gives it away on P17 at Leeds. How old is the rolling stock that dumps the loo on the rails. Old rolling stock and poor timekeeping do not justify the price rises we are seeing.

At vast expense no doubt a digital board has been fitted to Castleford station and today it was switched on. Maybe it's a coincidence but the train was actually on time today! Well lets ee if they can do it for a week and then i will decide if the issue is fixed or not!

Well it was getting better...mainly on time ish until Friday the 8th. Ok it rained it flooded but did anyone think to order some buses instead...well what do you think...ditched at Leeds ended up phoning a friend with a car. Oddly a few days before a bus grabbed us in the morning at Woodlesford as signalling issues in Leeds. Got to Leeds and met a friend who came in on the train as normal...sigh.

So far the last couple of weeks have set off on time but then sat outside Leeds for the same end of the world platform so usually a few mins late. As it is now summer we have the special treat of superheated rolling stock as it was built some time in the 1960's an open window is the air con. Unless of course the train stops. Add to that a sardine packing system and it really feels worthwhile.

15 minutes late leaving last night...sardine city...I had 2 weeks holiday but it seems not much has altered in that time.

I just love the way the boards say 'on time' even when the clock underneath clearly shows the due time has been and gone! Have a new game now it's called lets see how far along the platform at Leeds we can go without the passengers falling on the track when they get off, adds another few mins delay...Interestingly we are heading for the January fares review again soon and to be honest I can see nothing that has changed for my money from last time, including the rolling stock.

Well here we are again 12 months down the line from my original issue. This morning my fare has been jacked up by 7.5%. The monthly has gone up a little less but as a part time worker my travel days need to exceed 18 to make a saving, which they don't. What has improved in the last 12 months from the last rise? Not a lot, same ancient rolling stock, same cancellations, late running...will it improve for the extra money...well...what do you think..

Tuesday 12th Train due at Woodlesford at 07:12...no sign of it by 07:20 people are starting to leave. The sign on the platform still says 'On Time'.. I managed to shout to some of those leaving when the train is spotted arriving a few minutes later. No apology given and no reason provided. Unmanned station no where heated to wait in 1 degree temp. You have to love the guard who then tramples though demanding to see tickets. Utterly shambolic
