“Please help me persuade Transport for London to get the bus drivers to be more careful while children are getting in and out” – Archana A

Description

Archana A

Bus 114 to Ruislip at 2:00 pm Friday, we got down at Grange Road stop. This is near the Hillview Children Centre in South Harrow. I had my 1.3 year old baby and 4 year old toddler with me. I got out of the bus pushing the pram and turned back and held my toddler's hand helping him to get out of the bus. By then driver closed the door without verifying whether we got out of the bus completely. The door closed on the 4 year old's facing crushing both sides of his cheeks and most of his body in between. He was terrified and shocked and screamed in pain while I was shouting out for opening the door. The door momentarily opened and closed on him immediately trapping his hands again. He has scar marks still on his face today. My son was in great pain and he was shocked. The door opened releasing my son and he jumped out and clung to me shaking in pain and shock. I did not have anyone to help me at that time with my baby and the shocked toddler. The least the driver could have done was to acknowledge his mistake and apologize let alone checking we need any first aid help. I would really urge the driver to be more careful and considerate when small children and other vulnerable people enter and exit the bus.

    Dear Archana

Thank you for contacting us about what happened to your older
son, as you all left a 114 bus at Grange Road on 6 September.
Firstly I apologise for the slight delay in replying to you.

I’m very sorry this incident occurred. I wish your son a good
recovery from the injuries he sustained and his experience that
afternoon. I also hope he will not be deterred from using London
Buses again. The safety of our passengers is of paramount
    importance to us.

It is essential that drivers operate their bus safely and
competently at all times. They must always check that everyone
is clear of the doors before closing them. Should the driver
become aware of an incident, we would also expect them to offer
appropriate assistance so I’m sorry you did not receive any help
    from him.

I have forwarded the details of your complaint to London
Sovereign, which operates this route for us, so they can take
the appropriate action. Should you need to report anything in
the future, we would be very grateful if you can include a
description of the driver (or the bus registration number if
possible), as this helps the operator to positively identify
them more quickly. I appreciate this may have been difficult to
do so on this occasion however.

Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention. Please
contact us again if you need assistance in the future; if you
would prefer to call us, please use our cheaper rate number 0343
    222 1234 (24 hours).

    Dear Transport for London,

Bus 114 to Ruislip at 2:00 pm Friday, we got down at Grange Road
stop. This is near the Hillview Children Centre in South Harrow.
    I
had my 1.3 year old baby and 4 year old toddler with me. I got
    out
of the bus pushing the pram and turned back and held my
    toddler's
hand helping him to get out of the bus. By then driver closed
    the
door without verifying whether we got out of the bus completely.
The door closed on the 4 year old's facing crushing both sides
    of
his cheeks and most of his body in between. He was terrified and
shocked and screamed in pain while I was shouting out for
    opening
the door. The door momentarily opened and closed on him
    immediately
trapping his hands again. He has scar marks still on his face
today. My son was in great pain and he was shocked. The door
    opened
releasing my son and he jumped out and clung to me shaking in
    pain
and shock. I did not have anyone to help me at that time with my
baby and the shocked toddler. The least the driver could have
    done
was to acknowledge his mistake and apologize let alone checking
    we
    need any first aid help.
