“Please help me persuade Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company to help extend 56 bus first morning service to Wishing Tree Nursery” – Javier Ruiz

Description

Javier Ruiz

The 56 is a little bus that takes the longest possible route through the backstreets of North Brighton, picking up mostly pensioners and children.

It is the only direct route from Hollingbury to the mini-roundabout in the junction Carden Avenue / London Road, as otherwise you have to change buses (5b to 5).

This is the route to one of the most popular nurseries in the area, The Wishing Tree.

Bizarrely, the first morning service at 8am ends in Ladies Mile Road, making it useless for the nursery run. Extending this route to the mini-roundabout would cost little, and surely will save a few car trips in the area.

Problem History

Here is the letter that Javier Ruiz wrote.

56 bus not starting early enough

The 56 bus is the only direct link from Hollingbury to the junction Carden Avenue / London Road, where The Wishing Tree Nursery is located, as otherwise we have to change buses (5b to 5) or walk from Greenfield Crescent.

There is only one bus an hour and the first service bizarrely does not run all the way to London Road, so it is useless for taking children to nursery.

Extending this service would be a minor change that would possibly cut a few car trips in the local area.

    Hi Javier

This is one I can agree with, as a Brighton resident.

I think a key issue is that changing buses is penalised by the fare pricing system, otherwise it wouldn't be so much of a hassle to hop onto the 5.

Having said that, of course the children and pensioners are important passengers too!

Hi Javier - here's an idea - why not bits of paper with a short version of the web address of this page, and hand them to other parents at the Nursery?

In fact, it's so easy I've done some for you:

Do report back to let me know if you make use of these!

    Dear Mr Ruiz

Many thanks for your helpful comments on service 56.  This is
one of the services funded by the city council to serve areas
not reached by the main commercial bus network.

All council-funded bus services are currently under review and
we have been asking local organisations and users for their
views. We will take your suggestion for service 56 into account
    as part of our review.

    Kind regards

Hi, agree with fare problem, but it's not only the fare, with one bus you can time it via web (until we force them to open up the data!) instead of waiting for the second bus that runs every 20 minutes.

    Thanks Tom and Myf

I will try the paper, and will ask the nursery admin to mail out the link to parents.

It would be a great help extending this bus service, it takes me 40 mins on foot to get to the nursery which is a nightmare in winter.

I'm in agreement with this and would find it very useful if it was extended. Not very nice walking in the rain with a 3 year old!
