“Please help me persuade Wessex Connect to keep the 533 service, and to operate it better!” – Scott S

Description

Scott S

Hello,

I am writing to complain about the service provided by Wessex Buses on their 533 service.

About 4-5 months ago, I noticed on the Bath & North East Somerset Council/South Gloucestershire Council website an article about certain bus services and whether certain services should receive funding from the council to run.

About the 533 service, it said the consultation issue was "To consider whether financial support should continue to be provided to South Gloucestershire Council to support the contracted 533 service that links Keynsham to Mangotsfield." Although a few months ago, I have never found the result of the consultation.

BUT, I am worried that Wessex Buses and the local councils will suspend this bus service that is needed.

From what I gather from travelling on this service, it's not very busy at all, and without trying to sound ageist, many of the passengers I have noticed on this route are concessionary pass holders (from the passengers I've seen board this service). Recently the frequency of this service from Longwell Green Aspects to Keynsham was cut from every hour to every 30 minutes - the loss of the 532 service. The busiest I have seen this service is the Mangotsfield and Keynsham bound services at peak times - before 9am, and around 5pm. This route is a great local route and is vital for connections between East Bristol and Keynsham railway station, homes, and local shops.

But with this consultation, the frequency changing to every hour, and the fact that this service, over the last 10? years, has changed operators from First to Bath Bus Company, then back to First, then to South Gloucestershire Buses, then to Wessex Connect, then to Bugler Coaches and then returning now to Wessex Buses, I'm worried about the future of this service.

What makes me even more worried about the future of this service is the actions by Wessex Buses at the moment. In the last month, I have used this service at least 5 times. 4 Out of those 5 times, I've been told by the Drivers of the service that the "ticket machine is broke" and I should just sit down. The machine was lit up. I am worried that this is being done on purpose so that Wessex Buses can record having no passengers on these services, so that they can report this service is not profitable, and then something like the council allowing Wessex to finish this service will happen.

These services have also departed from stops too early. Last Tuesday, I was waiting for the service to Keynsham. It arrived at the stop 5 minutes early - the time printed on the ticket, and then arrived at Keynsham around 5 minutes early still. Although you should always get to a bus stop with plenty of time, 5 minutes is a long time before the scheduled departure from certain stops. This should not be happening. Like the "broken" ticket machines, I am worried that this is an act to get less passengers using this service (as they've missed it) so that this service can be taken off.

Another little grumble. It was in the news that an all-day ticket for Bristol had been launched. Costing £4.50, it said that the "Bristol Rider" could be used on ANY bus operator - including Wessex, in Bristol Zones 1 & 2. The route operated by the 533 service is within the Bristol Zones 1 & 2 area. I was told by the Driver of the 533 service that I could not purchase this ticket. Why is that?

Please do not take this service off. From travelling on this route, there are very little amounts of passengers, but please do not remove this vital service. I'd rather the frequency be changed to every 2 hours in the day, and every hour at peak times than the entire service being taken off.

Thank You for your time,

Scott
