Description

Michael McCarthy

Please help me persuade TFL to make bus-stop Countdown info available online and on mobiles, so people dont have to go to the bus stop and find they have to hang about there. Especially not in cold weather.

Here is the letter that Michael McCarthy wrote.

accessing Countdown info on mobile phones

I'd like to be able to access Countdown information on my mobile, so I don't need (especially in winter) to leave my flat before the bus is due. I believe something similar is available in Finland.

Interestingly, this information is available outside London through the traveline service and many other providers depending on the county you require; sometimes with the local authority, sometimes the bus operator providing this service. TfL is yet to adopt such a service, but as frequencies are so high on many routes there is little need to provide such information in comparison to areas where you are lucky to get one bus an hour! Reliablity is more crucial on less frequent services, but now this information is standard across many parts of the UK it is time London joined in!

TfL seem to bed testing this already! Not checked if this is working as I don't know a stop number off hand.

    Dear Mr McCarthy

Thank you for your feedback regarding accessing Countdown
information on your mobile phone.  I am grateful for the time
you have taken to get in touch.

Transport for London (TfL) fully understand how much customers
value Countdown. Therefore, you will be pleased to know that we
have expanded the ways in which you can receive this
information, with signs at bus stops being only one of the new
ways that bus arrival information will be provided to customers
from 2011. The new Countdown system delivers real time bus
arrival predictions for every one of London’s 19,000 bus stops.

The information will be provided through:

    * The Internet (fixed and to mobile phones)
    * SMS messaging to mobile phones
    * Countdown signs
    * Other displays e.g. Plasma displays in reception areas

The new and improved Countdown system is the next step in London
Buses' provision of real time bus service information to our
passengers. Bus users will be able to access bus arrival time
predictions for every one of the 19,000 bus stops and all 700
routes in London via the internet and mobile phones. This
service will be complemented by a new generation of Countdown
signs which will provide real time information at selected bus
    stops across London.

The mobile phone option will allow passengers to text their bus
stop number and bus route to a central telephone number to
receive real-time bus arrival times for that stop and route
directly to their mobile phones.  Real time information for
buses will also be made available via the internet. With greater
flexibility to provide real time information than SMS, web users
can be helped in their selection of the appropriate bus stop or
route with passengers enabled to search for their bus stop by
name, post code and on a map via TfL's website.  The internet
and SMS services will also be complemented by a new generation
of Countdown signs which will provide real time information at
around 2,500 key bus stops in London.

The system is currently in its testing phase and will be going
live in the coming weeks.  For further information about this
new system, please see the following link:
    [1]www.tfl.gov.uk/countdown

Thank you once again for taking the time to write.  If you have
any queries in the future please feel free to contact me.

    Yours sincerely,

    Tess Lotter
