“Please help me persuade Stagecoach in Cambridge to make their bus service a lot more reliable.” – Ingo Mittendorf

Description

Ingo Mittendorf

Stagecoach Citi 2 bus from Cambridge Science Park at 20:26 on 14/11/2011 did not show up at all.
No explanation or apology from driver of the next 20:56 bus. The reason cannot have been the traffic in the city centre (unlikely at this time of the day anyway) since half a dozen Stagecoach buses coming from the city centre disappeared on the opposite side down Cowley Road (where Stagecoach apparently has their bus depot).
Buses on this route are notoriously unreliable, lateness of 15-30 mins are the rule rather than the exception.

    Dear Ingo,
Thank you for your e-mail below.

I have checked our records and can see that the service in
question was unable to operate the journey in question due to
delays issues earlier in the afternoon.  I traced the vehicles
movements make and can see that the problem started at just
before 16:00 when the journeys from A to B and back where taken
longer than scheduled. At the time in which the driver was due
to operate the service from the Science Park (20:26) he had just
finished his journey to Addenbrookes. Due to this the driver was
unable to continue on route back into the City and then on to
the Science Park and then back to the City (this begin his last
journey) due to running out of driving hours. I am sure you will
be aware that our drivers are only permitted to driver a certain
number of hours by law and once these have been used they must
    not continue.

We work hard at Stagecoach to ensure our services run to the
scheduled time, however on occasions we are unable to do so due
to circumstances beyond our control such as traffic congestion,
breakdowns, road works or accidents especially during the busy
peak periods such as you have mentioned. In Cambridge on a
Wednesday i am sure you are aware that it is late night shopping
and this causes further issues with many of our services as
traffic levels are higher and many more passengers travel on our
services. We would love to be able to operate all our services
like clockwork, and assure you we strive daily to attain this,
but as it is we have to suffer many circumstances in Cambridge
on a regular basis. Unfortunately in a City like Cambridge with
a poor road network which is often badly congested, with low
level bus priority assistance and high volumes of traffic, they
often face substantial challenges on a daily basis.

As regards to the driver on the next service (20:56); this
driver would not have known where the other driver was or have
known there was an issue earlier as they are not able to
    communicate with each other.

The vehicle's in which you say you saw going towards the depot
will have been drivers how have finished for the day and
therefore returning the vehicles to the depot.

I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.I would like
to thank you for taking the time in contacting us here at
    Stagecoach Cambridge.

Ingo is correct the citi 2 is inefficient and does not run to its scheduled times, these are not one off occurrences but regular day to day running of lateness. We all accept occasional problems with public transport but not on a day to basis. If the published timetable route is impossible to keep to, then it should be amended so that the customer can use it accordingly. Buses are not a free public service but a paid service.

Useless (and late as per usual) X13 (Cambridge to Haverhill) broke down YET AGAIN, probably because for once I managed to get on it. It's becoming an increasing lottery with this bus. Will it turn up at all? Will it be so crowded with schoolkids that I won't be able to get on it? Will it make it the whole 17 miles to Haverhill? So hacked off with this bus, as are many of the other poor saps that have to get on it from Addenbrooke's. Will they sort it out? I'm not holding my breath.
