“Please help me persuade Northern Rail to not make me pay this ridiculous fine” – Phil Higgin

Description

Phil Higgin

i was in a rush as i had a job interview on the 21st January. I Bought a single to Manchester Victoria . I got off the train on platform 4 and needed to get some money out of the cash point for a metro ticket, opposite mcdonalds.I proceeded in this and threw my ticket in the bin as i knew i wouldnt be passing through the barrier as the stairs lead out behind. I then got stopped at the metrolink stop and had my details written down and being branded a liar. I was and still am fuming about the situation but i didnt argue as i needed to get to a job interview. And now you have sent me a fixed penalty notice of £84.50 !!!!! i do not agree to this at all. Please can you tell me what can be done because i am very un satisfied.

Unfortunately this is a well-known route for faredodgers to avoid the ticket barriers - and ideally you would not throw your ticket away until you had left Victoria completely. Having said that, I'm not sure on what basis the ticket inspectors stopped you. Had they followed you from the Arena concourse to the Metrolink platform, in which case they'd have seen you put some rubbish in the bin? Why didn't they prevent you from leaving the station footbridge without seeing your ticket?
