“Please help me persuade First Great Western Railway to re-instate Sunday Services from West Ealing station” – Simon Baker

Description

Simon Baker

Why are there no Sunday service to/from West Ealing or Hanwell (and stations to/from Greenford on the Greenford branch line)?

The current and new Great Western franchise only stipulate the MINIMUM number of trains the operator has to run per weekday or weekend. So there's no reason why First Great Western couldn't exceed the basic minimum, by introducing Sunday trains to West Ealing, Hanwell and/or on the Greenford branch line either at any time during the rest of the current franchise, or from summer 2013 when the new Great Western franchise is awarded.

Clearly this would provide a valuable service to passengers in those areas.

First Great Western services currently run straight through West Ealing and Hanwell stations on Sundays, so no major change to First Great Western's current operations would be needed to provide a service to/from these stations, but it would greatly improve transport links in this area of west London.

***Obviously public support for First Great Western's franchise bid should be increased if they commited to introducing a Sunday service.***

    Hello martine

Thank you for your email response.

Just to clarify, my question relates to why there are no trains stopping at West Ealing (or any station to Greenford on the Greenford line), on Sundays. Unless the evening services you refer to are new, here doesn't appear to be any service to/from these stations on a Sunday at all.

My request is that FGW re-introduce services that stop at Hanwell, West Ealing, and also to/from Greenford and intermediate stations, on Sundays.

    Many thanks

    Simon Baker

    Hello Oliver

Many thanks for your prompt reply confirming the position.

Both the existing and new Great Western franchises stipulates only the minimum number of trains the operator has to run per weekday or weekend. So it would appear that there's no reason why a customer focussed company like FGW couldn't exceed the basic minimum service it has to provide if it wished.

Could you therefore confirm whether FGW has any plans to exceed the basic minimum, by introducing Sunday trains to West Ealing, Hanwell and/or on the Greenford branch line either:

    1. at any time during the rest of the current franchise;
    or
    2. from summer 2013 when the new GW franchise is awarded (assuming FGW is sucessful)?

I look foward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards

    Simon Baker

    Dear Mr Baker,

Thank you for contacting us via FixMyTransport.com on 1 October 2012.

There are no plans to introduce a service at these stations in the current franchise period. This is because Sunday engineering works on the lines serving these stations is very frequent. We would not be able to maintain a consistent service and it would not be fair to set a timetable on that basis.

The franchise bid is being submitted by FirstGroup, based on an Invitation to Tender document set out by the Department for Transport (DfT). Under DfT rules First Great Western cannot comment on any specifics for the new bid.

We are always interested in feedback and ideas however and will bear in mind your comments.

Thank you again for getting in contact.

There's no reason why the Heathrow Connect can't stop here on a Sunday then?
