As we arrived at manchester victoria station this evening we where in a rush as the train was leaving in the next 3 mins we had to buy a ticket from the machine. As we paid we realised the machine had charged us for 4 tickets not 2 tickets! We asked the man who was checking the tickets what we should do and he said go to the office but there was no time he said ask the conductor! As we got on the train we where told there was nothing he could do and we need to get on quick the conductor also told us the tickets should be priced at half the price £1.50 not £3 so in all we paid £12 for 2 people to get 10 mins of a train journey! Is there anything that can be done?

Sophie,
It doesn't sound as if you have received a satisfactory answer to your question from Northern Rail.
As this concerns a ticket transaction you may want to contact them directly but please do come back and update your page with any progress you make - that way you still get the benefit of other people being able to track your problem and add their support if it's pertinent to them.

The half-price tickets are, I assume, "Cheap Evening Returns" - which are only valid for return journeys on the same day within Greater Manchester that start between 1830 and 2100hrs. It's been my experience at Piccadilly and Oxford Road that ticket machines operated by Northern Rail do not sell these tickets. However, ticket machines operated by Virgin Trains *do* sell these tickets - but as Virgin don't operate to Victoria, there aren't any ticket machines there.
