“Please help me persuade Southern to uCKFIELD Trains overcrowding and fare disparities” – Vince Simeone

Description

Vince Simeone

every train in the morning and evening rush hours are overcrowded and, since the Olympics finished, are of less carriages or delayed and even cancelled. I pay the same fare as a traveller who alights at Uckfield, the terminus, which is 7 stops further, but have to stand at least to East Croydon every day. 1 stop towards London, at Hurst Green, the fare is nearly £50 a month cheaper (nearly 20%), why is this and when will the overcrowding be tackled by Southern ?

    Dear Mr Simeone

Thank you for contacting us on 04 October 2012 concerning the
overcrowding on our services and the price of fares in
    comparison to others.

Unfortunately the way you have worded your enquiry concerning
the fares side of things is too vague for us to be able to
investigate and provide you with an accurate answer.

Please can you re-iterate your enquiry with exact journey
details such as departure, destination, date and time of your
journey as well as the ticket type purchased. You will also need
to provide the same details for the Uckfield journey you have
mentioned so that we can explain how the fares compare and how
    they are worked out.

As for the overcrowding aspect of your enquiry we do have an
action plan which is taking place in 2013. I would like to
assure you that the overcrowding and congestion you have
witnessed on some of our services will be somewhat decreased in
2013. The reason for this is that we have ordered 100 plus
    carriages for our network.

We expect to receive these carriages in early 2013. They are
being built from scratch as we do need a certain type of
carriage to be compatible with our lines and network hence the
length of time before we can take delivery.

Once we have these carriages they will be deployed across our
network to ease overcrowding on many of our services as well as
lengthening short formation services where platform lengths
    allow.

Network Rail are currently in the process of making platform
lengths longer to incorporate longer formation services at key
stations throughout the country and this will aid us greatly in
increasing capacity on our own network.

    Vince,
I see Southern have requested more information on your journey before giving a full reply. You can contact them by clicking on the 'Email' button just below their message.
I assume you are travelling from Edenbridge Town as you mention it is 7 stops along the line from Uckfiled. One comment I would have is that I believe the train order they mention is for electric trains and will therefore not be used on the line to Uckfield:

Southern gave their usual trite reply and since then the overcrowding problem has increased. Now the trains are full of standing passengers before it reaches Edenbridge Town. Their reply said they have invested in new carriages BUT none are to be Diesel, which means that our journeys are destined to become even more unbearable.
